Cave Corn

These tiny cobs were found in a cave near Dolores, Colorado. How many years they had been there is unknown, but the cool, dry environment would have preserved them for some time, perhaps centuries. Only a tiny fraction of the seed germinated but those grew into unusual maroon stalks with three slender ears on each stalk.Acouple years ago only small samples of this, perhaps the rarest corn seed on Earth, were available. This season I have more and can send 75 seeds so we can maintain the genetic diversity.
